Contest Winner: Louise Kelaher
It was simple, all Louise had to do was “Friend” TriathaNewbie.com by April 1, 2011. We picked one “Friend” at random and she won The essentail Triathlon Swimming DVD by TriSwimCoach — wicked easy!
How long have you been doing triathlons?
Since last summer- I did “My 1st Tri” in Harrison Mills July 24th 2010, then the UBC Tri (Sprint) March 6th this year.
How do you balance your workouts with family/job responsibilities?
I’m lucky in that i work at the YWCA downtown Vancouver in Member services.. so i have no excuse.. I’m in the gym BUILDING everyday!
Do you have a favorite triathlon moment?
Hmmm it would be finishing the 1st one (it was about 35’C and i honestly thought I might pass out on the run!)
What is the best advice you can give to a newbie?
Just try it, I just made it my mission to get through one section at a time, as i knew I could do all the sections individually, at start, my mission was to get through the swim, that’s all I focused on.. then I ticked that off, got on the bike, and said the same thing.. the run is my worst leg due to knee problems, so i just figured if I had to walk the 5K that would be fine.. of course by then with everyone cheering etc, I ran most of it!.. Once you finish, no matter if you are 1st or last, you feel amazing!
What is your favorite workout?
What’s next for you?
Next Tri is the Lees Triathlon May 28th! Then maybe the Vanc one Sept 5th!
Why do so many triathletes struggle with the swim? It’s not because they’re horrible swimmers. It’s not because they’re out of shape. The reason why most triathletes fizzle out in the swim is because they are doing it wrong

I just wanted to let you know that I ordered your Essential Triathlon Swimming DVD about 2 months ago, because I decided to get into the sport of triathlon and it didn’t take long to find out that swimming was my weakest discipline. I’ve watched the DVD over and over, and have been implementing the drills into my workouts. You really can tell the difference once you’re “doing it right”.
My first tri was on March 29, and involved a 500M OWS. I entered the “First Timers” swim wave which consisted of 99 males. And I am excited to inform you that I was the 4th guy out of the water! 9min 25sec. Your drills really do work and have helped me develop a strong and efficient stroke.
