Triathlon Event  Hello I am doing my first indoor triathlon (I am not a swimmer) I am expected to take swim lesson in January so I wanted to participate in this race so one of the guidelines is that if you don’t swim you can doggie paddle, backstoke, walk etc. I have been doing my indoor practice by running up in down doing laps in the pool. Will I be looked at strange? Any other suggestions.

First off, congratulations on making the decision to participate in your first mini-triathlon. We’ve never heard of a mini-triathlon that allows it’s participants to walk, jog or doggie paddle in the water for the swim leg, but there are all types of hybrids out there, so it’s not too much of a surprise. Many gyms are using hybrid triathlons to heighten interest in exercise and motivate its members to get moving.

Your question is will you look strange if you are running in the water up and down the lane? Our answer is that if everyone else is doing something similar or the same thing then you’ll fit right in.

We would like to suggest that you keep your plans to take swim lessons so that if you really enjoy doing triathlons, you can sign up for a tradition mini-triathlon. It is always respectful to the sport to be able swim proper freestyle (crawl) during the swim portion for the distance required.

We suggest that you also take a look at this instructional dvd and guidebook: Triathlon Swimming Made Easy: The Total Immersion Way for Anyone to Master Open-Water Swimming. It will teach you to swim effortlessly and comfortably in the water.
